Char Dham Yatra 2025 — Complete Guide for First-Time Pilgrims

3 min read

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, visiting four divine shrines nestled in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. For millions of devotees, completing the Char Dham Yatra is a lifelong dream. Here is everything you need to know before embarking on this spiritual journey.

What is Char Dham Yatra?

The Char Dham (meaning four abodes) refers to four sacred temples in the Garhwal Himalayas. The yatra is traditionally completed in a specific sequence — starting from Yamunotri in the west and ending at Badrinath in the east. Together these four shrines represent the four cardinal directions and are believed to cleanse the soul of all sins.

The Four Sacred Shrines

1. Yamunotri — Source of the Yamuna

Located at an altitude of 3,293 metres, Yamunotri is the source of the sacred Yamuna River. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is surrounded by stunning glaciers and hot springs. The trek to the temple from Janki Chatti is approximately 6 kilometres each way.

2. Gangotri — Source of the Ganges

Gangotri is situated at 3,100 metres and is the origin of the sacred Ganges River. The pristine temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga is set against a backdrop of majestic snow-capped peaks. The actual source of the Ganges, Gaumukh Glacier, is 19 kilometres further and can be trekked with proper permits.

3. Kedarnath — Abode of Lord Shiva

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath sits at a towering 3,583 metres and is perhaps the most dramatic of the four shrines. The trek from Gaurikund is 16 kilometres and takes you through stunning mountain scenery. Helicopter services are also available for those unable to trek.

4. Badrinath — Abode of Lord Vishnu

The final shrine of the Char Dham Yatra, Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and sits at 3,133 metres near the Alaknanda River. The temple’s colourful facade set against the snow-covered Neelkanth peak is one of the most iconic sights in the Himalayas.

Best Time to Visit

The Char Dham temples are open from May to November each year. The exact opening dates vary annually and are announced by the temple authorities. The best time to visit is May to June and September to October when the weather is pleasant and the routes are clear.

How to Reach

The nearest airport and railway station to the Char Dham circuit is Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport and Dehradun Railway Station). From Dehradun, the yatra typically begins at Haridwar or Rishikesh from where road transport is available to all four shrines.

Important Tips for Pilgrims

  • Carry warm clothing even in summer as temperatures drop significantly at high altitudes
